My very first tastes of wine were sometime during my high school years. My parents had let me have a few glasses of champagne they had bought for New Year's Eve. It was very tasty I thought, a bottle of Martini & Rossi Asti. From then on I have loved most sparkling wines, especially the very crisp and almost tart tasting ones. I tend to stay away from the very dry champagnes. Ever since that first taste I had loved drinking sparkling wines but never really did so unless it was New Year's Eve or some other very special occasion. So really only having it a few times a year.
I have tried a few wines in the past few years(non sparkling) and never really liked any of them. For the most part, I have stayed away from wines in general since I love to drink so many other things. I'm a huge beer and bourbon fan so I had always stuck with those. This year I decided to broaden my horizons a bit and try to branch out and try some wines. I knew what sparkling wines I liked so I tried to find some wines that were fairly similar to that to start with. Let me tell you, since then I have not gotten very far. I love most Rieslings, but have not been able to find anything much different from the very sweet wines that my palette really agrees with. To this day I still cannot stand any red wine that I have tasted.
My goal for this year is to really branch out and try tons and tons of wines. I'm very excited about this Geography of Wine class I'm taking and feel it will make me so much more knowledgeable about the subject. Who knows, maybe by the end of this semester I might be able to stand the taste of red wines! But probably not......
